Molecular clinical trial is a biomedical or behavioural research studies on human participants to analyse molecular profiling like sequencing, genotyping or mRNA expression profiling to inform therapeutic choices for patients suffering from various diseases. NCI-Molecular Analysis for Therapy Choice (NCI-MATCH) is a clinical trial that analyzes patients’ tumors to determine whether they contain genetic abnormalities for which a targeted drug exists (that is, “actionable mutations”) and assigns treatment based on the abnormality. NCI-MATCH seeks to determine whether treating cancers according to their molecular abnormalities will show evidence of effectiveness.

Nuclear medicine is a medical speciality that uses small amounts of radioactive material in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease in early stage like heart disease, neurological disorders, several types of cancer and other abnormalities of the body. Molecular imaging includes the field of nuclear medicine, which uses very small amounts of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose and treat disease. In nuclear medicine imaging, the radiopharmaceuticals are detected by special types of cameras that work with computers to provide very precise pictures of the area of the body being imaged. Nuclear medicine can also be used to treat certain types of cancer and other diseases.

Cell therapy is used for the treatment of diseases like cancer by injecting living whole cell or maturation of a specific cell population in a patient. The molecular and cellular medicine portfolio focuses on basic biological mechanisms or technologies relevant to understanding the aetiology of, or developing treatments for, health and disease. This includes specific responsibility for the MRC’s cancer research portfolio, including basic biology, epidemiology and early translational research.

Molecular medicine is a broad field which deals with the use of chemical, biological and medical techniques to analyse the fundamental, molecular and genetic errors of the disease and their treatment. Recent advances in molecular and cell biology have enormous potential for medical research and practice. So far, they have been most successfully exploited for determining the causes of diseases and how to control them. However, it is clear that recombinant DNA technology and modern cell biology will find applications in almost every branch of medical practice. It is revolutionizing cancer research, has spawned a biotechnology industry that is already producing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic agents and, in the longer term, promises to play a major role in clarifying the causes of some unsolved mysteries of modern medicine: cardiovascular diseases, neuronal diseases, infectious diseases and many others. It should also help us to gain insights into broader aspects of biology, including development, aging and evolution.

Gene therapy is a technique of therapeutic delivery of nucleic acid polymers as a drug into the cell of patient’s to treat disease. The polymers are targeted to possibly correct gene mutation. Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. In the future, this technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery. Although gene therapy is a promising treatment option for a number of diseases (including inherited disorders, some types of cancer, and certain viral infections), the technique remains risky and is still under study to make sure that it will be safe and effective. Gene therapy is currently only being tested for the treatment of diseases that have no other cures.

Metabolomics is the study of chemical processes involving metabolites and metabolomic analysis accurately determine the changes in molecular profile related to disease, disease progression, genetic modification, therapeutic intervention or environmental variation. Metabolomics aims to compare the relative differences between biological samples based on their metabolite profiles. It can provide an instantaneous snapshot of the entire physiology of an organism. Researchers use Agilent metabolomics solutions to study a wide variety of problems: disease research, toxicology, environmental analysis, agriculture, biofuel development and nutrition. Diabetes mellitus characterized by hyperglycemia is a group of metabolic diseases caused by unbalanced regulation of the signalling cascades that mediates insulin action in the cell, defect of insulin secretion or both. The insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and their receptors and binding proteins constitute a family of cellular modulators that play essential roles in the regulation of growth and development. The IGF ligands include three structurally related peptides: insulin, IGF-I, and IGF-II.

Tissue engineering is an emerging multidisciplinary field that uses a combination of cells, engineering materials and biochemical factors to improve or replace biological functions which in turn improve the health and quality of life for millions of people worldwide by restoring, maintaining, or enhancing tissue and organ function. Tissue engineering evolved from the field of biomaterials development and refers to the practice of combining scaffolds, cells, and biologically active molecules into functional tissues. The goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs. Artificial skin and cartilage are examples of engineered tissues that have been approved by the FDA; however, currently they have limited use in human patients.
